Developing a Safe and Generic IrDA Solution for External Devices

JARC Jayasinghe, IMK Fernando

Data communication between electronic devices and computers has several disadvantages when having physical connections. This project was originated to provide a solution to such an instance, where a physical link between an external system (such as a modem and a computer) was prone to damage both devices by the other in result of any electrical surges. Infrared was identified to be more inexpensive and widely adopted short range wireless technology that allows devices to “speak” easily to each other. Thereby IR was selected as the base wireless communication medium for providing solutions to address intended problems. In addition to replacement of IR in middle of COM port to COM port communication, other varieties of connections were replaced/linked using IrDA technology, including PC to PC, PC to serial modem, and PC to IrDA compliant phone.
