ABSTRACT

Managing disasters has increasingly come under scrutiny from the world community. The stakeholders of this domain find it increasingly difficult to coordinate and respond to emergency situations. The result of this is increase in number of deaths, delay in access to basic needs, slower recovery time. With this paper, we look at how the incorporation of ontologies can aid in the disaster management process. This paper looks at the ontological standards that are already in existence and its future for this domain. In future, we hope to look at a business model which enables ontologies to be embeded in similar application domains.
